Unterer Börnchenweg / Lower Börnchenweg
Harxheim field name
1 “OSTERSTEIG / ON THE OSTERSTEIG” (1309)
The Ostersteig owes its name to an ascending path (Steige) used for Easter celebrations and processions long before the chapel was built in 1864.
2 “IN THE BÖRNCHEN”
Thus, locally a part of the parcel is called “Überm Gau-Bischofsheimer Weg”. Börnchen is the little spring, the little fountain or the little spring. Visible springs no longer exist in this area today.
3 “OVER THE / UNDER THE GAU-BISCHOFSHEIMER WAY” (1373)
These are fields that lie on the way from Harxheim to Gau-Bischofsheim.
1 “AN DER MAHLSTEIG” (1309)
The name “Mahlsteig” was taken from the name of a steeply rising section of the old Gaustraße leading to Mainz. It is possible that it derives from the spinning of wheels on steep or wet roads, as this was often referred to as “grinding” in the past. Due to the steep ascent at the Mahlsteig, in the past even a prestressing service was used. The syllable “mahl” also recalls a medieval place of judgment (Middle High German mâl). These were preferably built in elevated locations near traffic routes. A derivation from the Middle High German mäl (sign, border sign) is also conceivable, since the border to Gau-Bischofsheim is located here.
