Field names

“Flurnamen (…) are names for agriculturally used areas (fields, meadows, vineyards, fallow land, etc.), community-owned facilities (bakehouse, gallows) and natural objects (forest, paths), which are located outside of settlements” (Flurnamen – namensforschung.net).

Their task is to facilitate orientation outside the village boundaries. Increasingly, however, the names, some of which are very old, are disappearing due to building development or land consolidation.

Professor Dr. Klaus Faiß, Emeritus for Comparative Linguistics in the Department of English, who died in 2016, rendered outstanding services to the research of the Harxheim field names. Through his meticulous work he was able to find an explanation for many Harxheim field names.
