Field path on Nack
Harxheim field name
1 “IN DER KÜHHOHL” (1685)
This was the name given to a pasture used especially for cows and located in or near a hollow. A hollow refers to an elongated, deep depression or hollow way.
2 “ON NACK / BEHIND NACK” (probably 2nd half 14th century)
“Nack” (occiput, neck) in the context of field names means a projecting mound or hilltop. In 1543 the two names are mentioned together in a document for a field located in the direction of Zornheim.
3 “AT THE ZORNHEIMER WAY” (1725)
The location on a road leading to Zornheim gave this parcel its name.
1 “SCHACKENBORN” (1309)
The first documentary evidence (“zu zackenburne”, 1304) is followed by “Sackerborne” already in 1309. This name suggests that it was wet pasture land for communal use (Middle High German “born” for spring). The name “Schackenborn” has been in use since 1512.
2 “IM BELLENKLAUER” (1576)
The name “Im Bellenklauer” suggests a wet meadowland (Klauer) occupied by poplars (Bellen) at that time.
1 “IN DER KRUMMGEWANN” (1419)
Parcels and paths are named after their curved, arched appearance. The or Gewann was originally the field boundary where the plow was turned.
2 “ÜBER DER GLOCKWIESE” (1543), locally also “IN DER GLOCKWIES”.
During the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), a church bell is said to have been buried here to save it from enemy hands. The marshy meadow terrain was suitable for this. It is fitting that the word “meadow” is related to an Old Norse word meaning “mud”.
