Jewish life in Harxheim: Sara Mayer

Sara Mayer, born on December 15, 1908, school years in Harxheim and Mainz, emigrated to the USA as early as 1930.

The ship’s passage on the SS Milwaukee departed Hamburg for New York on January 24, 1930, arriving on February 6. Sara immediately applied for naturalization and was granted American citizenship on July 11, 1935. This was reported to the Harxheim registry office. 1) 2) 3)

Sara, now calling herself Saerri or Shari, worked in New York as an accountant. On November 26, 1936, she married Gerhard Zapun (born February 17, 1910, Niedersalzbrunn, Silesia), a decorator from Silesia, in Manhattan. They were registered at 214 Audubon Av. in Manhattan. They lived there with Gustav and Rose Halle, a couple related to the Mayers. This address was to become the point of contact in the new homeland for all family members who later left Germany. 1) 2) 4) 5)

The marriage of Sara and Gerhard produced the children Paul (born 19.12.1941) and Simone (31.07.1945 – 08. 04.2003). 6)

Sara Mayer passed away in New York on October 16, 1993. 7)
