1 “AN DER MAHLSTEIG” (1309)<\/strong>
The name “Mahlsteig” was taken from the name of a steeply rising section of the old Gaustra\u00dfe leading to Mainz. It is possible that it derives from the spinning of wheels on steep or wet roads, as this was often referred to as “grinding” in the past. Due to the steep ascent at the Mahlsteig, in the past even a prestressing service was used. The syllable “mahl” also recalls a medieval place of judgment (Middle High German m\u00e2l). These were preferably built in elevated locations near traffic routes. A derivation from the Middle High German m\u00e4l (sign, border sign) is also conceivable, since the border to Gau-Bischofsheim is located here.<\/span><\/p>\n
